Inner Engineering by Sadhguru

Inner Engineering by Sadhguru

“The only way out is in”

The entire book is based on engineering your inner world to create an external world of bliss, and to live a life of constant joy.

Sadhguru is a mystic from India. He has drawn much attention to himself with his unconventional approach to life. It can seem very esoteric in the eyes and minds of westerners, but much of what Sadhguru speaks has caught the attention of top academics like MIT, Harvard, Yale, Google and international organizations, to name a few..

Taken from Sadhguru’s site he writes the aim of the book, which states,

“My aim in this book is to help make joy your constant companion. To make that happen, this book offers you not a sermon, but a science; not a teaching, but a technology; not a precept, but a path.” – Sadhguru

Inner Engineering helps the reader realize that they have a limitless ability to respond, responsibility. Our experiences are created within. For example, light shines to the back of our eyes and we flip and make sense of the image in our heads.

“Responsibility offers you the choice of action.” (page 59) we have the ability to respond to anything, but we are limited when it comes to the actions we can take. The ability to choose our action is freedom.

With practice and experimentation one can go from reacting (being a slave to the experience) to responding (freedom to choose our action). Even if the experience is negative we still have the ability to respond whichever way we choose. What we have to work with is our body, mind, and energy.

“If you don’t water your garden, will it flower?” In order to get results we have to do the right things (page 46). Karma is just action repeated, mental action, physical action, energetic action, so on and so forth. Albert Einstein said that insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. In order to get the results we have to do the right things.

We have to feed the body the right food when it is hungry, We have to rest when the body needs rest. When we take care of the basic survival aspects of the body we are better able to work with the mind. The body and mind are not separate, the way you feel (body) usually determines the way you think (mind) and visa versa.

I have come to understand the nature of rest and how vital rest is for the body. Rest gives the body time to repair and grow and the mind time to make sense of everything. Taking sleep and meditation more seriously will improve ones life.

I would recommend reading Inner Engineering to get a better understanding of the nature of Yoga. I only touch on a few aspects of the book that I have been experimenting with. With everything I read, I experiment on myself to get a better understanding, otherwise the book would be useless. As you read Inner Engineering, read with a perspective of “I do not know”

“‘I do not know’ is the doorway — The only doorway — to seeking and knowing” (page 12). Socrates once said, “I only know one thing, and that is I know nothing.” From that perspective, you can now see a doorway out of the self created box we have all put ourselves in. A doorway to the unknown.

What boxes have you put yourself in?

What actions do you see have created difficulty in your life?
