Educated by Tara Westover

As the new year rolls around many people set challenges to accomplish in the coming new year. This new year 2019 I challenge others and myself to read 100 books.

Book number one is Educated by Tara Westover. This is the first time reading a memoir and within minutes I was in a world, Tara’s world.

Educated by Tara Westover is a memoir of her life growing up as a mormon then going on to receiving her Ph.D. in history at Cambridge.

Although this was my first memoir I have read it was really interesting to read Tara’s story. Her mom was a midwife, and her dad owned a junkyard in the mountains of Idaho.

Her dad believed conspiracy and were prepping for doomsday. Her dad believed when the “apocalypse” happens we will be the only ones prepared.

It wasn’t until Tara went to BYU, without any former prior schooling, that she started to question her families beliefs. The family believed that homeschooling was the true education because the government has infiltrated the public school system. Of the family’s seven children, three decided to leave and all three went on to receive Ph.D’s.

As children our education starts from our parents teaching us how they think the world is and how to function. It isn’t until we get older that we see other perspectives.

We fear change, but change is the only constant. Life is constantly changing yet so many people are stuck in the old. Education is ongoing: asking questions and making the uncomfortable comfortable.

My biggest takeaway from Educated by Tara Westover is that everyone has a story and people are living a different life than yours. Different ideas, beliefs, tastes..

Tara’s writes very well about her self-discovery. Her writing grabbed and held my attention making it hard to set the book down.
