Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future by Peter Thiel with Blake Masters

The book was an extension of in depth notes that one of Peter Thiel’s students at Stanford wrote. Becoming a internet hit, Peter and Blake put together this book to help everyone build the future, and how to successfully start a company.

While I was reading this book I was following the roadmap set by other successful entrepreneurs: Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg (both wrote forwards for the book).

Peter Thiel writes the similarities between all successful companies, and how they eventually went on to becoming an unclassified monopoly.

There are four main lessons, Peter states on pages 20 – 21, that entrepreneurs learned during the dot-com crash in the early 2000s:

  1. Make incremental advances
  2. Stay lean and flexible
  3. Improve on the competition
  4. focus on product, not sales

Play for the long run. There is a big trend right now to be an influencer because it shows a life of travel and simplicity. There is an abundance of photos and content: What makes someone stand out?

I believe it’s the people that keep coming back. Making incremental advances along the way tweaking their style constantly to a specific niche.

To the entrepreneur/individuals that love coming back, and want to build the future, this is the book for you.

The future is simply the set of all moments yet to come.

The most important point that separates continual successful companies from the ones that go bankrupt: innovation / creativity / change

If it wasn’t for Innovation and the constant push for change / new Apple would have went bankrupt. For reference I would recommend watching the movie Jobs staring Ashton Kutcher playing as Steve Jobs.

Have you read Zero to One by Peter Thiel? What was your takeaway from the book?
